Filerimos Hill: History, Panoramic Views & Wild Peacocks

Located on the scenic west coast of Rhodes, Filerimos Hill is one of the island’s most rewarding hidden gems. It perfectly blends ancient ruins, medieval history, and peaceful nature—without the intense midday crowds you find elsewhere.

The Medieval Monastery & The Peacocks

At the heart of the hill sits the Monastery of Our Lady of Filerimos, built in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John. It features a striking mix of Byzantine and Gothic architecture, surrounded by towering cypress trees.

The real stars of the show here are the dozens of wild peacocks that roam freely across the grounds and lounge in the branches above. They are completely accustomed to visitors and make for incredible photos.

The Golgotha Path & The 17-Meter Cross

Directly opposite the monastery is a stone path shaded by pine trees called the “Golgotha.” As you walk past the stone shrines depicting the Stations of the Cross, you’ll reach the summit’s crowning feature: a massive 17-meter concrete cross.

If you aren’t afraid of tight spaces, you can climb the narrow internal staircase to the top arms of the cross. The reward is a spectacular, uninterrupted panoramic view of the Aegean Sea and the northern coastline of Rhodes.

Ancient Ialysos

Long before the medieval knights arrived, Filerimos was the acropolis of Ancient Ialysos, one of the island’s three original ancient city-states. Right next to the monastery, you can still walk among the remnants of a 4th-century BC Temple dedicated to Athena.

🍸 Local Insider Tip: Before heading back down the hill, stop by the small local kiosk and try Sette Erbe (Seven Herbs). It is a bright green, herbal liqueur made from a secret recipe originally brewed by the monks on this exact hill. You can’t find it anywhere else!
