THE ANCIENT CITY OF KAMIROS
Ancient Kamiros: The Pompeii of Rhodes
Unlike the grand temples of Lindos, Ancient Kamiros offers something entirely unique: a remarkably preserved look at the daily lives of ordinary ancient Greeks. Discovered buried under centuries of soil, this three-tiered hillside city layout is so complete that it is frequently called the “Pompeii of Greece”—minus the volcano.
The Amphitheater Layout
Kamiros was built over a sloping hillside facing the sea, arranged like a giant amphitheater divided into three distinct levels:
The Lower Level (The Agora): The heart of public life, featuring monumental columns, public baths, and ancient storefronts where merchants traded.
The Middle Level (The Residential Quarter): A strict grid system of block housing where regular citizens lived. You can still walk down the narrow stone alleys and see the exact thresholds and courtyards of Hellenistic homes.
The Upper Level (The Acropolis): The religious summit dominated by the Temple of Athena and a vast Stoa (porch) overlooking the entire region.
The 600,000-Liter Cistern
The true engineering marvel of Kamiros is the massive 6th-century BC reservoir sitting at the very top of the hill. This enormous, plaster-lined stone basin could hold roughly 600 cubic meters (160,000 gallons) of water. It supplied the entire population below through an intricate network of terracotta pipes, a layout that still blows modern engineers away.
⚠️ Local Sun Warning: Kamiros is an active, open-air archaeological dig with no tree cover. The midday Mediterranean sun bounces directly off the white stone ruins. Sturdy walking shoes, hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water are non-negotiable before passing through the ticket gate.
🐟 Local Insider Tip: Because Kamiros is entirely a protected historical site, there are no modern shops or tavernas inside. Have your host drive you 15 minutes further down the coast to Kamiros Skala. It’s a tiny, traditional fishing harbor lined with exceptional seafood tavernas right on the water’s edge. Eating fresh catch of the day while looking across the sea to the island of Chalki is the perfect way to reward yourself after walking the ruins.
