Lindos Village and the Acropolis
Lindos Village: Whitewashed Labyrinth & Ancient Acropolis
As the most iconic village on Rhodes, Lindos is a spectacular, car-free maze of sugar-cube houses, vibrant bougainvillea, and dramatic coastal views. It gets incredibly busy midday, but its ancient history and unique layout make it an absolute must-visit.
The Labyrinth & Captain’s Houses
The village itself is a beautiful trap designed to confuse medieval pirates. As you wander the narrow, winding alleys, look out for the historic 16th-century Captain’s Houses. You can spot them by their heavy stone doorways and peek inside to see their traditional chochlaki courtyards—intricate floors made entirely of black and white sea pebbles.
The Acropolis: A Journey Upward
Perched on a 116-meter-high cliff directly above the village is the Acropolis of Lindos. It’s a steep walk up (or a ride on a traditional donkey taxi), but the reward is immense. Inside the ancient fortifications, you’ll find the monumental columns of the 4th-century BC Temple of Athena Lindia.
📸 Insider Photo Tip: Before you enter the main archaeological site, look at the rock face at the base of the steps. You’ll see a unique 2,200-year-old relief of an ancient Rhodian warship carved directly into the stone.
The Heart of St. Paul’s Bay
Once you reach the highest point of the Acropolis, look down the back cliffside. You’ll get a bird’s-eye view of St. Paul’s Bay, a spectacular natural harbor with crystal-clear turquoise water that forms the shape of a perfect heart.
Local Vibe & Rooftops
The village floor is packed with bustling boutique shops, local crafts, and cafes. Because space is tight on the ground, Lindos has a massive rooftop culture.
🍸 Local Insider Tip: Don’t just eat at a ground-floor taverna. Head up to one of the village’s many rooftop restaurants or bars for a cold drink. Watching the sunset hit the illuminated Acropolis from a rooftop is the best way to experience Lindos.
